Singer, songwriter, anti-racist activist and great advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community around the world, Brazilian artist Bia Ferreira defines her music as MMP (música de mulher preta), meaning “black woman music”. Her songs wander between R&B rhythm, soul ballads, afrobeat, reggae groove or Bahian padogão to serve a conscious rap and a sharp flow. Her songs talk about the body, racism, homophobia, women’s rights and love. Bia Ferreira was revealed to the public in 2017 with the title “Cota Não É Esmola” which highlights the importance of the quota system for the access of the black population to the university. The title then recorded several million views and listening until it became a mandatory step for the entrance exam to the University of Brasilia. With two albums in her pocket, a nomination for the Woman in Music Awards 2018 and a more than remarkable performance at the WOMEX in Lisbon in 2022, the native of Carangola now plays everywhere, from Brazil to Europe. And sees one of her dreams take shape: that her music, with texts sung in Portuguese, can be heard and understood by people all over the world.
